Summary

A Course in
Miracles
is a complete self-study spiritual thought system。 As a
three-volume curriculum consisting of a TextWorkbook for
Students
, and Manual for Teachers, it teaches that the way
to universal love and peace—or remembering God—is by undoing
guilt through forgiving others。 The Course thus focuses on the healing
of relationships and making them holy。 A Course in Miracles also
emphasizes that it is but one version of the universal curriculum, of
which there are "many thousands。" Consequently, even though
the language of the Course is that of traditional Christianity, it expresses
a non-sectarian, non-denominational spirituality。 A Course in Miracles
therefore is a universal spiritual teaching, not a religion。
The "Text"
presents the theory of the Course and has built into its study the development
of the experience of forgiveness that is the Course's goal for
the student。 In this regard, A Course in Miracles states that "its
goal for you is happiness and peace。" (Text, p。 241) (T-13。II。7:1)
The Text also explains the basis for fear and guilt, and how they can
be overcome through miracles, which are defined as maximal "expressions
of love。" Miracles are also defined as the shift in perception from
fear to love。

The "Workbook
for Students" consists of 365 lessons, an exercise for each day
of the year。 This one-year training program begins the process
of changing the student's mind and perception, though it is not intended
to bring one's learning to completion。 As stated in the Preface to the
Course, "At the end, the reader is left in the hands of his or
her own Internal Teacher, Who will direct all subsequent learning as
He sees fit。" (Preface: ix)

The "Manual
for Teachers" is written in question-and-answer form and provides
answers to some of the more likely questions a student might ask。 It
also includes clarification of a number of terms the Course uses, explaining
them within the theoretical framework of the Text and for their practical
application through the Workbook。

A Course in
Miracles
was "scribed" by Dr。 Helen Schucman through a
process of inner dictation she identified as coming from Jesus。 A clinical
and research psychologist and tenured Associate Professor of Medical
Psychology, she was assisted by Dr。 William Thetford, her department
head, who was also a tenured Professor of Medical Psychology at the
Medical Center where they both worked。

A Course in
Miracles
was first published in 1975, the year Dr。 Schucman assigned
copyright of the Course to the Foundation for Inner Peace (FIP)。 Since
the beginning and as designated, this Foundation has been its publisher,
disseminator, and copyright/trademark holder, although in 1999 it assigned
the copyright and trademark to the Foundation for A Course in Miracles
(FACIM)。 There are currently about one and a half million copies of
the Course in circulation worldwide。 Translations in Chinese, Dutch,
German, Hebrew, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish are also available,
with twelve other translations now in progress。

What exactly,
then, is A Course in Miracles? The summary introduction, which
appears in its Text, is quite succinct and brief。 It reads:

"This is
a course in miracles。 It is a required course。 Only the time you take
it is voluntary。 Free will does not mean that you can establish the
curriculum。 It means only that you can elect what you want to take
at a given time。 The course does not aim at teaching the meaning of
love, for that is beyond what can be taught。 It does aim, however,
at removing the blocks to the awareness of love's presence, which
is your natural inheritance。 The opposite of love is fear, but what
is all-encompassing can have no opposite。

This course
can therefore be summed up very simply in this way:

Nothing real
can be threatened。

Nothing unreal exists。

Herein lies
the peace of God。"

I have no idea what to say about this book。 It’s been part of my life for so long, it’s difficult to remember anything else。I can’t even give it a star rating。On one hand, it’s the most profound text ever committed to text。 On the other, it’s a massively repetitive example of California charlatanism。Either way, it’s underpinned much of my personal philosophy ever since I started it。

Religious book It is a very religious book。 You can read the Bible too and get the same message。 However, the author separated topics very well and focuses on talking only in the topic。

I do not recommend this book。 It is very difficult to read unless you are doing so with a group and can discuss it as you read。

Mastering the course becomes the goal rather than attaining peace。 Only 5% in and struggling with three pages to explain what should have been 3 paragraphs。 Wordy, repetitious, often contradictory, and most pseudo-quotes from the Judeo-Christian Bible out of context and misinterpreted。 Found some nuggets here and there, but there are too many books on forgiveness and peace out there, to wade through the knee-deep wordiness of Course in Miracles。 See my library for books I've loved。 Will try anot Mastering the course becomes the goal rather than attaining peace。 Only 5% in and struggling with three pages to explain what should have been 3 paragraphs。 Wordy, repetitious, often contradictory, and most pseudo-quotes from the Judeo-Christian Bible out of context and misinterpreted。 Found some nuggets here and there, but there are too many books on forgiveness and peace out there, to wade through the knee-deep wordiness of Course in Miracles。 See my library for books I've loved。 Will try another 50 pages。。。。。Did another ten and can't continue with this random, non-sequential, disorganized, word salad。 FINISHED。 。。。more

I would hardly say I "read" this book, but I skimmed much of it, got a sense of the plan。 I can see how it has inspired and influenced so many spiritual teachers。 I feel like the best way to fully absorb and practice and understand this would be to study this with a group over the course of many weeks/months, or with a teacher。 A book to slowly, slowly read, digest, and practice。 I would hardly say I "read" this book, but I skimmed much of it, got a sense of the plan。 I can see how it has inspired and influenced so many spiritual teachers。 I feel like the best way to fully absorb and practice and understand this would be to study this with a group over the course of many weeks/months, or with a teacher。 A book to slowly, slowly read, digest, and practice。 。。。more

Wow well that is a monumental work, it starts out maybe forty percent Jesus but near chapter 20 it gets to over 60% and by chapter 30 is at the max level of 70%。 Good stuff。Yeah it is not as good and clear as the LLResearch material but for what it is still deserves 5 stars。 Many good quotes。 Even if it is of a rather low information density at times so tends to meander a bit。

I read about fifty pages。 The entire book is about 1000 pages。 This reminded me of another book I read called Remembering Wholeness。 That book might ultimately be influenced by this book (Remembering Wholeness was influenced by Louise Hay's works, which were influenced by A Course in Miracles)。 I skim-read all of Remembering Wholeness and felt like I didn't get much out of it spiritually--there would be some bits, some sentences, that I felt like were true but then there were whole paragraphs th I read about fifty pages。 The entire book is about 1000 pages。 This reminded me of another book I read called Remembering Wholeness。 That book might ultimately be influenced by this book (Remembering Wholeness was influenced by Louise Hay's works, which were influenced by A Course in Miracles)。 I skim-read all of Remembering Wholeness and felt like I didn't get much out of it spiritually--there would be some bits, some sentences, that I felt like were true but then there were whole paragraphs that felt muddled to me。 Reading the first fifty pages of A Course in Miracles was doing the same thing to me。 I would read it and feel like, yes there are some good truths to this。 I can learn from this。 But then there were also paragraphs that I was reading and feeling my eyes just glazing over。 Some parts seemed so muddled。 Also there were portions that took quotes from the Bible and completely rephrased them to take on entirely changed meanings--sometimes opposite meanings。 That seemed strange to me。 There was another review that pointed out this isn't necessarily a Christian book, and I agree with that, because I feel like there are portions completely contradicting the Bible's messages。I identify as part of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, so I am willing to believe that this was the author's personal revelation for her own life。 The trouble with it is I feel like it has elements of truth in it, but I feel like it's distorted from her own human imperfections。 And thus while it may be good revelation for the author's own life, it might not necessarily be useful for my own life。 。。。more

Transformative read that is impossible to summarise adequately。 My biggest takeaway was that true forgiveness is not the decision to forgive somebody that has wronged you but the realisation that no wrong has occurred to forgive, through corrected perception of reality via the acknowledgment of subtle/divine/intangible forces and realities as the source of the true self, as opposed to the ego/body/personality as the basis for your identity。 All seemingly disparate global issues are at their core Transformative read that is impossible to summarise adequately。 My biggest takeaway was that true forgiveness is not the decision to forgive somebody that has wronged you but the realisation that no wrong has occurred to forgive, through corrected perception of reality via the acknowledgment of subtle/divine/intangible forces and realities as the source of the true self, as opposed to the ego/body/personality as the basis for your identity。 All seemingly disparate global issues are at their core caused by the illusion of separation and the consequential over identification with the body/ego。 There is only one solution。 What a relief! 。。。more

I found this book to be a powerful brain training tool for those coming from a Christian background。 It encourages the reader to focus on the present, and not get bogged down on issues which cause internal conflict。 There is a strong emphasis on human unity, which if put into practice, can lead to a better outcomes in life。 Found it to be repetitive at times。

It has changed my life literally。 It’s taken me almost two years to finish it (this first time) and the change in how I view life is radical。 I am in piece despite my life circumstances。 Definitely not a book for everyone but if you are drawn to it, go for it。 For me, reading first Gary Renard’s The Disappearance of the Universe helped me better grasp ACIM concepts immensely。

Life changingSo simple。 So challenging。 So important。 So timely。 I bought it about 10 years ago。 Didn’t start reading it until about 4 years ago。 On advice from David R。 Hawkins (not personally), I started with the lessons。 One each day。 Took 2 years to go through them twice, then I spent a year reading the manual。 I tackled the lessons for teachers last and have just completed it。 I have read many books on my long spiritual journey, none have impacted me like this one。 Forgiveness = Salvation
